Wales’ Woodland Resource Has Enabled a Mid-Wales Farming Family to Grow a Thriving Business

Llandre Sawn Wood, Hundred House

Garry and Eve Price diversified the family sheep farm and contracting business 12 years ago when they took advantage of a timber processing grant from Forestry Commission Wales to set up a sawmilling business – Llandre Sawn Wood at Hundred House.

The business grew quickly, creating local employment not only for their sons – Gethin in charge of production and Eifion responsible for sales and key customer accounts, but also for their 30+ employees.

Specialising in home-grown timber species Spruce, Pine, Western Red Cedar, Douglas and Larch the product range includes all timber fencing materials, square section timber cut to your requirements, cladding, firewood and biomass – nothing goes to waste.

In 2013 the family purchased Preserved Timber Products Ltd in Builth Wells, a retail platform from which they supply not only their own products but also home-grown and imported machine graded C16 and C24, plywood, OSB and fibre boards.

“Acquiring the PTP site and business operations was integral to our growth strategy. We have worked hard to develop a strong standing in our industry and the local community, the Builth Road site provides us with a strong retail base for our growing product range. We are excited about the prospect of growing our business in Mid Wales.” EIFION PRICE, PTP

STRUCTURAL TIMBER

The company had always retailed structural timber but with an eye to the future and with a growing renovation and self-build market, took the opportunity to be able to supply its own sawn home-grown structural timber. Garry and Gethin attended the five day visual grading course run by Coed Cymru and Exova BMTRADA in Tregynon and achieved accreditation in April this year.

CLADDING

When Tabitha Binding of Woodknowledge Wales was challenged by Ben Meade of PYC Construction to find local cladding suppliers that could meet the specification, delivery times and prices of imported cladding – she recommended three.

PYC chose to work with Llandre Sawn Wood who supplied Douglas fir cladding for the new House Building Factory in Welshpool and Ty-Newydd in Pont Robert.

“It’s great working with an efficient local Welsh company supplying quality Welsh timber quickly and competitively.” Ben Mead Director PYC
