The climate emergency means rethinking the way we design and build housing. The UK Green Building Council, RIBA, and LETI are advocating for net-zero carbon homes with targets established for 2025, 2030 and beyond. National and local governments across the UK are beginning to mandate that new-build homes must reach zero-carbon in the near future.

A new approach to designing net-whole life zero carbon homes is needed if we are to address the challenges laid down by the climate emergency.

Delivering net-whole life zero carbon in housing is complex and currently unregulated but through the development of design-led innovation the social sector offers a ‘quick win’ to lead the world towards the 2050 Net Zero target.

Our Design for Low Energy course is led by Dr Rob Thomas of Hiraeth Architecture and will present results from Zero Carbon Homes: Zero Carbon Timber Solutions for Wales.

 

Course content

We will present low energy design solutions that work for Wales and are relevant for clients who are looking to procure zero carbon homes, designers looking to design zero carbon homes and house builders looking to build zero carbon homes.

The course will cover the following:

  • The design of typical social housing types including the impact of form factor, orientation and space heating demand.
  • Design based upon principles of a low-carbon fabric first approach.
  • The power of integrating energy modelling into design.
  • Design considerations (house types, form factor, layout, orientation, arrangements, and fabric) and the impact in terms of energy requirements.
  • The relationship between design and offsetting to achieve net-zero homes.
  • Implications for clients, designer and house builders.
