In January 2017, Powys County Council adopted a Wood Encouragement Policy with the purpose of providing a stimulus to the local timber industry. This was a first such policy in the UK.
However, a similar policy was adopted by Hackney Council in London in 2012 aiming to stimulate timber construction as a climate change mitigation strategy. Hackney can now be said to be leading the world in timber construction.
This presentation by Vincent Stops (the Hackney Councillor at the heart of this agenda) includes many pioneering structures from Cross Laminated Timber and other structural timber products. They include schools, public, mixed use and residential buildings.
