Woodknowledge Wales encourages open discussion and feedback on its response to the Sustainable Farming Scheme consultation

A land-use policy that operated at a landscape scale with appropriate incen:ves to encourage
Woodknowledge Wales in consultation on the Sustainable Farming Scheme
coopera:on at that scale will mean that there are many more ecosystem service benefits than
small, isolated interven:ons at a single farm level. The Pontbren Project (supported by Welsh
Government) started to show some of these benefits.
Larger areas of woodland are more sustainable and resilient and therefore if a landowner wishes
to plant an extensive area of woodland in a suitable area why not encourage that and allow
there to be a “trade in woodland cover” between farms (e.g. a rights-based market instrument
similar to milk or fishery quotas and water trading rights). Larger areas reduce cost of
management and increase ecosystem service benefits such as biodiversity.

Woodknowledge Wales is very supportive of the appropriate expansion of Welsh forestry. We would, very much welcome and encourage any feedback you may wish to share around our response and on this topic in general.
