The Wash House, a low-impact amenities building showcasing reclaimed materials, local timber, and circular design principles has been nominated in both Retail and Leisure and Low Energy categories

Woodknowledge Wales Associate and structural engineer Toby Maclean has been shortlisted for two categories at this year’s Structural Timber Awards, recognising his contribution to The Wash House project at The Secret Campsite in East Sussex.
The project, developed by Toby’s practice Allt environmental structural engineers alongside architects Local Works Studio and contractors Rural Workshop, is a new amenities building designed with the lowest possible environmental impact. It has been nominated in both the Retail and Leisure and Low Energy categories, with winners to be announced on 1 October 2025.

Replacing a previously consented but carbon-intensive concrete block design, the new building demonstrates how structural timber and circular economy principles can deliver a high-quality, low-cost alternative. The structure uses reclaimed BT telegraph poles for both foundations and framing, complemented by locally sourced larch and sweet chestnut for the superstructure. Roofing materials were also reclaimed or sourced as factory seconds.
By drawing on materials from the site and its surroundings, the design team created a light, airy space that enhances the camping experience while significantly reducing environmental footprint. The approach prioritised reuse at the start of the project’s life, rather than only at end-of-life — setting a powerful example of resource efficiency in practice.
For Woodknowledge Wales, the recognition reflects the values that Toby brings to his work as a member of our team: championing timber’s role in sustainable construction, promoting low-carbon strategies, and demonstrating innovative applications of circular design.
The Wash House stands as a clear reminder that timber-first, locally rooted solutions can achieve both environmental and economic gains — and that such projects deserve to be celebrated on the national stage.
We’re delighted to see Toby recognised for his outstanding work. Best of luck to Toby and his project team at the Structural Timber Awards – we’ll be cheering you on!
