The Home-Grown Homes Project: creating a more climate resilient future for Wales by expanding the use of timber in social housing to accelerate decarbonisation of the natural and built environments.
Between 2018 and 2021, applied knowledge from the delivery of high-performance, low-carbon timber social housing was used to inspire the development of Wales’ forest industries and identify key policy opportunities.
From 2023 to 2025, efforts have focused on supporting the implementation of new policies related to decarbonisation, social housing, forestry, and the circular and foundational economy. This work aims to drive sector development and inform Wales’ first Timber Industrial Strategy.
Looking ahead to 2025–2027, the focus will shift to implementing the Timber Industrial Strategy across social housing, timber manufacturing, and forestry. This will enhance the social, economic, and environmental value of Wales’ forest industries.

The Home-Grown Homes project is the work of many passionate, patient and persistent individuals across a number of organisations in Wales and beyond. We’d like to express our sincere and heartfelt thanks to every single person who has been involved in the journey so far; whether as an official project partner, an interviewee, a workshop participant or by providing feedback on our findings and recommendations. We are immensely grateful for all your inputs, guidance and advice, and mostly for your great commitment to support this endeavour.
The journey continues and we’re looking at best ways to implement, test and further improve our tools and recommendations. Your feedback on our findings is important to us, please get in touch.
