Woodknowledge Wales is collaborating with Colombian partners on a new international initiative focused on sustainable local construction, regenerative supply chains and addressing housing shortages in vulnerable communities. This work brings together Welsh and Colombian organisations in a shared learning process, exploring how natural materials, local skills and innovative design approaches can contribute to more resilient and inclusive housing systems.
The project centres on the development of an initial scale-model Bio-Pod prototype, designed using locally sourced materials, which will act as a catalyst for future full-scale development. This is complemented by the development of a digital platform assisted by Artificial Intelligence, aimed at supporting transparent communication across sectors and decision-making throughout the housing value chain. Researchers are already on the ground, visiting case studies in informal settlements in Medellín and rural areas of Antioquia, engaging with communities, local producers, industry stakeholders and local government partners. These early stages are focused on building knowledge, partnerships and context-specific approaches that can inform future scalable solutions, while fostering a two-way exchange of expertise between Colombia and Wales.
