Future talent for a low-carbon society

May 26, 2020 by admin

Skills shortage and lack of programmes to teach our future workforce how to build more sustainably, which techniques to use when and how to make them mainstream, and most importantly how to advance existing solutions to make the good stuff even better. Two sides of the same coin, repeated many times over, a real road block to achieving a low carbon society. So what are we going to do about it?

Working with existing providers

As part of the Home-Grown Homes project we are working with the education sector to explore some of the insight that is emerging from the project and how this might be embedded within learning programmes. We are consulting with Universities and Colleges to do this. We have also developed strong links with Techniquest, a science and discovery centre supporting teachers and schools across Wales. Our collaboration focuses on learning about the forest, forest industries and carbon literacy. We’re off to a promising start but nothing can replace applied knowledge…

Connecting science and practice: Nuffield Future Researchers programme

This is what the Nuffield Future Researchers programme does: It is an exciting opportunity to connect the worlds of science and practice across a range of industries in Wales.
The 6-week programme aims to provide a meaningful and rewarding research experience for Year 12 students during the upcoming summer holidays. From mid-July to the end of August 2020 students can develop essential science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) research skills. Students will be supported by a professional researcher on a live research question and embark on new and innovative ways of working within a virtual learning environment.
Eligible students have completed the first year of A levels and either come from a household where the income is less than £30k OR are a first generation university applicant in their family. A great opportunity to discover and nurture future talent!

Help develop Wales’ future technical talent base

The Nuffield research placement programme is as much an opportunity for your organisation as it is for our future talents. This is just a short list of reasons why you should consider offering a placement:
● Support young people and diversify your workforce.
● Provide your staff with opportunities to apply and develop their coaching, mentoring and management skills.
● Work with bright, capable students to complete a variety of tasks including data analysis, scoping and research reviews.
● Fulfill your public engagement, widening participation and corporate and social responsibility goals by working with students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
● Forge strong links with schools and colleges in your local area.
Further information about the programme can be found here.

How to get involved

If you are interested in learning more about this project or would like to offer a placement, please contact Andrea Meyrick, Head of Education, at andrea@techniquest.org for more information.
